GCI’s Telecommunications Intern program is designed to give hands-on experience in a real-world business environment while interfacing with GCI professionals to learn about employment opportunities available within the telecommunications industry. Students will work alongside GCI employees to gain the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to be successful in a business environment while supporting the organization’s mission, vision, and values. On-the-job experience includes working on assignments, projects, and activities of varying complexity.

Intern duties and responsibilities

As the first point of contact for a high-traffic, shared-use facility the position will answer general questions, receive maintenance requests, provide wayfinding support, and maintain scheduling for the conference centre. Keep accurate inventory for office and breakroom supplies and equipment including stocking and ordering. Coordinate maintenance with internal support departments and external vendors to ensure the facility is working at the highest standards. Support event planning including ordering meals, making travel arrangements, scheduling furniture reconfiguration, and ensuring appropriate audio-visual system configuration.

Minimum Qualifications for Telecommunications Intern

Requirement of Internship program:

This Internship program is designed for students who have achieved a GPA of 2.8 and offers them the opportunity to learn and be mentored by a GCI manager/supervisor.

  • Must be actively in High School at a junior or senior level or College student.
  • Must be at least 14 years of age. Must adhere to and meet conditions per Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development Sec.23.10.325 – 23.10.370 and Title 8 Chapter 05 of Child Labor for minors 14 to 15 years of age rules and guidelines.


  • Familiarity with telecommunications.
  • Some computer (IT) and cellular phone experience.

Driving Requirements for Interns

Telecommunications Intern may require access to reliable transportation for occasional travel, such as between retail store locations, offices, worksites, or other locations as needed.


  • Work is primarily sedentary, requiring daily routine computer usage.
  • Ability to work shifts as assigned, work in standard office/home office setting, and operate standard office equipment.
  • Ability to accurately communicate information and ideas to others effectively.
  • Physical agility and effort are sufficient to perform job duties safely and effectively.
  • Ability to make valid judgments and decisions.
  • Available to work additional time on weekends, before or after normal work hours and holidays when necessary.
  • Must work well in a team environment and be able to work with a diverse group of people and customers.
  • The company and its subsidiaries operate in a 24/7 environment providing critical services to Alaskans and may need to respond to public health and safety matters or other business emergencies. Due to business needs employees might be contacted outside of the core business hours to respond to an immediate emergency. As such, you will be required to provide emergency after-hours contact numbers, including your home and cell phone numbers if you have those services.
